The first burn of a candle is a crucial step that significantly influences the overall performance and lifespan of your candle. This initial burn sets the stage for subsequent uses and ensures you get the most out of your candle. Here's why the first burn is so important:
1. Even Wax Pool: During the first burn, the goal is to allow the entire surface of the candle to become a liquid pool of wax. This helps establish an even "memory" for the candle, preventing tunneling.
2. Preventing Tunneling: Tunneling occurs when the candle burns down the center, leaving a thick wall of wax around the edge. This not only wastes wax but can also diminish the overall fragrance and lifespan of the candle.
3. Maximum Fragrance Release: A full wax pool allows the fragrance oils to vaporize efficiently, ensuring that you experience the full intensity of the scent.
4. Candle Longevity: By avoiding tunneling and maintaining an even wax pool, you maximize the number of hours you can enjoy the candle.
Tips for the First Burn:
Allow the candle to burn until the entire surface is liquid, typically 2-4 hours depending on the size of the candle.
Trim the wick to about 1/4 inch before lighting to control the flame and prevent excessive sooting.
Keep the candle away from drafts to ensure an even burn.
